Mississippi County, Missouri is
located at the confluence of the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers in the heart
of the Nation, 150 miles southeast
of St. Louis and 150 miles north of Memphis, TN. It is the easternmost
county in the state of Missouri, and is surrounded on three sides by 95
miles of Mississippi River frontage.
Mississippi County is located at the northernmost portion of the "Mississippi Delta," and is characterized by rich topsoil, deposited over thousands of years by the rivers. The soul has fostered and nurtured an intensive agricultural based economy that grew to prominence from the cultivation of cotton, melons, corn, soybeans and wheat. Recent years have seen the introduction of potatoes, popcorn, tomatoes, peppers, and other variety vegetables as the agricultural industry has gradually diversified.
Center pivot irrigation systems
have become common to the county, but their use has not affected that abundant
supply of ground water from aquifers thousands of feet deep...aquifers
that are recharged
from the Ozark hills and from the
river it self.
